Delirium, a frightening and dangerous syndrome of confusion and disorientation, affects nearly half of CHI St. Luke’s Health’s critically ill patients. That’s why two of our nurses developed a prevention program and have launched a groundbreaking study to better understand, prevent and treat this condition, which can have a devastating impact on the lives of so many of our patients and their families.
The Grami-Smith Delirium Prevention Bundle®, named after the two nurses, is a treatment model that includes pain management, sleep and exercise promotion and sensory stimulation. Thanks to the generous gifts of supporters like you, this trademarked treatment is already helping critically ill patients at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center. With more than 1,000 patients receiving the new interventions, we’ve seen significant decreases in the duration of delirium symptoms and in the need for pharmaceuticals to treat them.
Your investment in this ongoing program will allow us to undertake a broader study of this treatment model by helping expand it to six acute-care hospitals within Catholic Health Initiatives (including Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center). Your support plays a critical role in our goal to build healthier communities.
