Prior to the exam, you will be asked to complete a safety form and review it with the technologist.

Before your MRI exam, remove all accessories, including hair pins, jewelry, eyeglasses, hearing aids, wigs, and dentures. Metal/foreign objects may interfere with the magnetic field, affecting image quality.

Notify your technologist if you have:

  • Aneurysm clips
  • Neurostimulators
  • Prosthetic joints—hip, knee
  • Pacemaker (or artificial heart valve), defibrillator, artificial heart valve
  • Intrauterine device (IUD)
  • Metal plates, pins, screws, surgical staples
  • Tattoos, permanent make-up
  • A bullet or shrapnel or ever worked with metal
  • Are pregnant or suspect you may be pregnant
