Cardiac rehabilitation is an important part of recovery for patients with heart conditions such as heart attack, angina, open-heart surgery, coronary artery angioplasty or stents, heart failure, or heart transplantation. Rehabilitation begins during your hospital stay and will continue on an outpatient basis four to six weeks after discharge. CHI St. Luke’s Health offers comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation.

The goal of cardiac rehabilitation is to improve quality of life by helping patients:

  • Understand the heart condition
  • Reduce the risk of future heart complications through lifestyle changes, including exercise, better eating habits, and smoking cessation
  • Learn to manage stress and conserve energy
  • Improve emotional well-being and self-confidence

Family members or caregivers are encouraged to be involved. Together, you’ll better understand your diagnosis and coping strategies. Exercise components of each session include breathing techniques and flexibility movements, as well as endurance and strength training.
